The Prize and Reward Scams We’re Seeing This Month
Fake prizes, giveaways and rewards are still circulating. Here is what to check before excitement turns into a payment or phishing trap.
Winning something feels good before you have had time to ask whether you actually entered.
That is exactly what prize scams rely on.
This month, we have continued to see suspicious messages involving rewards, giveaways, gift cards and unexpected winnings.
Start with the obvious question
Did you enter?
If the answer is no, the message has a serious credibility problem.
If the answer is yes, do not stop there.
Check the real promotion.
Look at the organiser’s official website or verified social account.
Find the competition terms and see how winners are actually contacted.
Do not use the winning message as your only source of truth.
Paying to receive a prize should make you suspicious
The scam often turns a huge reward into a tiny obstacle.
You have won something valuable, but first you need to pay:
- delivery
- tax
- insurance
- administration
- customs
- verification
The fee feels small compared with the prize.
That comparison is part of the persuasion.

Gift cards are another warning sign
If a supposed prize organiser asks you to buy gift cards and send the codes, stop.
The same goes for cryptocurrency or payments to unrelated individuals.
These methods are attractive to scammers because they are hard to reverse.
Social media giveaways are easy to copy
A fake account can copy a brand’s:
- logo
- profile photo
- recent posts
- competition graphics
- wording
The message may even arrive shortly after you interacted with a real giveaway.
Check the username carefully and verify the result from the brand’s actual account.
Do not trust a new account simply because it looks familiar.
Sometimes the real target is your information
The scam may not ask for money immediately.
Instead, the “claim form” asks for:
- your full name
- address
- phone number
- card details
- account login
The prize is just the reason to collect the information.
Before filling anything in, check the destination with the scam website checker.
Excitement should not replace verification
That is the whole trick.
Urgent scams use fear to make you act quickly.
Prize scams use excitement.
The emotion is different. The goal is the same.
Slow the process down, verify the organiser independently and never pay simply because you are afraid of losing the reward.
