The Job and Recruitment Scams We’re Seeing This Month

Fake recruiters and too-good-to-be-true job offers keep appearing. Here is what to verify before sending money or identity documents.

A job offer is one of the easier ways to get someone excited before they have had time to verify the person contacting them.

That is especially true when the role promises remote work, flexible hours, quick hiring or unusually generous pay.

This month, we have continued to see suspicious recruiter messages and job offers come through for checking.

A real company name does not make the recruiter real

Scammers can copy:

  • company logos
  • recruiter names
  • job descriptions
  • LinkedIn profiles
  • email signatures

Before sharing sensitive information, confirm that the person is actually connected to the company.

Check the employer’s real careers page.

Look at the sender’s email domain.

Contact the company through details you found independently.

If the role exists only inside the conversation with the recruiter, that is a problem.

A job should not require you to pay for the privilege

One of the clearest warning signs is when employment suddenly becomes a financial transaction.

Be cautious if the “employer” asks you to:

  • buy gift cards
  • send cryptocurrency
  • pay for training
  • pay for equipment through a specific seller
  • deposit a cheque and forward money
  • receive and resend parcels
  • use your personal bank account for company transactions

A legitimate job should not turn you into the company’s payment rail.

Identity documents should come later, not first

Hiring eventually requires personal information.

But there is a big difference between completing formal onboarding with a verified employer and sending a passport to a stranger after a few messages.

Before sharing identity documents, ask:

  • Have I had a credible interview?
  • Can I independently verify the company?
  • Am I using an official HR system?
  • Is this information really needed at this stage?
  • Do I understand who will store it?

If the process feels rushed, slow it down.

Remote hiring is real. So is remote fraud.

The fact that a job is remote does not make it suspicious.

It also does not remove the need for verification.

A real remote employer should still have a real organisation, a real hiring process and people you can independently identify.

Be especially careful when the entire process stays inside a messaging app and the recruiter avoids normal company channels.

Read the whole conversation

A recruiter name by itself tells you very little.

The useful warning signs usually appear across the conversation:

  • unrealistic pay
  • immediate hiring
  • no meaningful interview
  • requests for money
  • early requests for identity documents
  • pressure to move off-platform
  • payment through unusual methods

Use the recruitment scam checker or job offer scam checker if something does not add up.

A good opportunity should survive a little verification.
