The Family Impersonation Scams We’re Seeing This Month
New-number and broken-phone messages keep appearing. The safest response is to verify the person before the conversation becomes urgent.
Some scams begin with panic.
Family impersonation often begins with something much quieter.
“Hey, this is my new number.”
That is all it takes to start replacing a trusted contact channel.
This month, we have continued to see messages built around new numbers, broken phones and family identities.
The first message may be completely harmless
That is part of the trick.
There may be no request for money.
The sender simply wants you to accept that this new number belongs to someone you know.
Once that feels normal, the conversation can move on to the real request.
Maybe a bill needs paying.
Maybe they cannot access their banking.
Maybe they need a gift card.
Maybe the situation is suddenly urgent.
Verify the identity early
The best time to verify is before the request becomes expensive.
Try:
- calling the old number
- using a known email address
- messaging the existing family group
- contacting another relative
- asking a private question only the real person should know
Do not put the answer inside the question.
A copied profile photo and familiar name are not enough.

Refusing a call can be important
There can be legitimate reasons someone cannot speak.
But if the sender repeatedly avoids a voice call while asking for money, that deserves attention.
The same is true if they create reasons you should not contact anyone else.
Secrecy and urgency are often more informative than the family story itself.
A clean phone-number search does not prove identity
A number may have no public scam reports.
That can mean it is legitimate.
It can also mean it is new.
Phone reputation cannot prove that the person behind the number is your child, parent, partner or friend.
Relationship verification has to happen outside the new channel.
If you already sent money
Contact the payment provider quickly.
Tell them the transfer may be connected to impersonation fraud.
Save the messages and warn the real family member that their identity may be being used.
For suspicious messages, paste enough of the conversation into the SMS scam checker to show the story and the request.
A real relationship deserves verification through a real relationship channel.
